PERSONALITY
The Batter is someone who comes off as a quiet, unemotional man. He's always to the point when speaking to others and doesn't mince words, responding in short sentences or just simply answering questions with a "Yes.", "No." or "Whatever.". That's not to say he can't be chatty, however. He has some rather long speeches when facing off against the Guardians and there are moments in the game where the Batter does yell, for example if the player continues to attack Enoch during the first fight when he's invincible rather than run away. But these moments are the exception rather than the rule.
To say the Batter is an incredibly determined individual is putting it lightly. He allows nothing to come between him and his mission and is very rarely if ever distracted from it. Got a problem with specters? Then he's your guy. Otherwise the Batter doesn't care about much else. To this end he's also a rather pragmatic individual and shown to be fairly intelligent, although he leaves most of the puzzle solving to the Player. The Batter doesn't seem to mind that he's being controlled by someone else and has no problems with following another's lead, provided their end-goals are the same, that is.
He has his somewhat sillier moments as well. Judging from the photos taken in Zone 2's theme park, the Batter really enjoys riding roller coasters and has zero problems with dragging a statue of Zacharie along for a ride. Later on it's revealed that the Batter does have some measure of control regarding what the Player does...but he doesn't do anything about this (or it might just have to do with his legendary inability to care). In fact if the Player attempts to stick him in the back, the Batter informs them he prefers sitting in the front. Guess stoic purifiers have things they like...?
So all in all, he's a pretty quite guy with a mission to beat up ghosts. Seems okay, right? Well no. While the Batter is the protagonist of OFF, he's also very much the villain. His holy mission to purify the land is just that: take it back to zero and end it, regardless of if the people deserves it or not. He is not remorseful of this fact at all. The world of OFF is a flawed one yet there is still some good in it. But in the Batter's eyes it's better off being destroyed then continue on in its corrupted state, calmly ending the world and his own existence with a simple line and a flip of a switch:
"Escaping from your purpose is impossible."
What the Batter regards as 'pure' and 'impure' is very black and white, to the point he doesn't seem to understand the concept of grey areas. For example, after seeing Dedan screaming at an Elsen for not doing his job, the Batter claims that he's a specter and needs to be destroyed because he is hostile, despite the Elsen insisting otherwise. It doesn't seem to matter to him what one's positive achievements are prior - and all the Guardians did do good things, once upon a time - once you become impure then you need to be purified.
Still there are some moments where he seems to express some level of kindness. When Hugo expresses fear of the darkness, the Batter states that there will be no more darkness, a statement that can be taken as a rather callous comment or an attempt to sooth the child before his death. And after the battle with the Queen he encourages her to "dream sweet dreams" when she dies and even before that agrees with her that they both were equally neglectful of Hugo and that his own eyes are like the child's: full of fear. However what the Batter truly means during these talks are unknown. Mortis Ghost has confirmed that both the Batter and the Queen are unreliable as narrators, after all. So this, much like everything else in OFF, is left up in the air.
Currently in LifeAftr, the Batter is struggling somewhat between his lack of emotions and a lack of purpose to continue existing. Why exactly he feels so little towards his life without a purpose is unknown, but he's trying as much as he can to fill it with something, least he lose the rest of his reasons to continue to exist.
ABILITIES
Competences: Basically your standard RPG flavor of physical attacks/elemental attacks/healing along with a fancy scan ability. These abilities cost the Batter CP to us and his current total is listed under the LifeAftr info section. His Competences are:
Wide Angle: A scan that shows the name, HP, CP and a small description of an enemy. An example of what it'll look like in Lifeaftr:
The Batter
Purificatory physical incarnation
HP: ??? / CP: ???
No weaknesses/resistances
Save First Base: Restores a small amount of HP
Save Second Base: Restores a large amount of HP
Save Forth Base: Revives someone. In-game this will only revive someone who's knocked out rather than dead.
Run with Courage: An attack with the Metal Element
Run with Grace: An attack with the Plastic Element
Run with Dementia: An attack with the Smoke Element
Run with Belief: An attack with the Meat Element
Furious Homerun: An attack that hits a little harder than the Batter's regular attack.
Magic Homerun: An attack that hits much harder than the Batter's regular attack.
The Batter would also have three Add-Ons, however they did not come in with him. He can obtain two through Offering Requests and they will be listed here when acceptable.
Like a few people in OFF, the Batter addresses the player by whatever name and gender they enter in the beginning of the game. In LifeAftr they are known as "the Player" or "the Puppeteer".
Finally for those who have deeply negative CR with the Batter may see him a little differently then others. Negative CR is the baseline to see this form: if your character has an ability that you think would allow them to see the Bad Batter, feel free to let that happen or if you're not sure, hit me up! We can work something out.
LIFEAFTR HISTORY
The Batter arrived in LifeAftr when the game opened in August 2017, right after he flicked the switch OFF and ended the world. He quickly found himself stranded on a raft with two other people - Shiro Fujimoto from Blue Exorcist and Marcille from Dungeon Meshi - and without his Puppeteer. He eventually made it onto dry land with their help and a spell that allowed one to walk on water, which was great because he couldn't swim. None of the new arrivals to the island were give a chance to figure out what the hell was going on because night was soon falling and staying outside on a unfamiliar beach was probably a dumb idea. Like many, the Batter beat a retreat into some ruins. In here he met quite a few people, among them being Ren from Fragile Dreams - who requested that she could watch him sleep, which wasn't creepy at all - and Frisk from Undertale, who was going under the name "Kittu" due to reasons from their own CRAU. Although the Batter was terrible with children for many reasons, he got along with Ren for the most part but Frisk, having an aborted Genocide Run under their belt, recognized a lot of themselves from that run in the Batter and their conversation didn't go as well.
Eventually, during one of the first few dreams the Batter ever experienced, he met one of the Gods of the island, the Storyteller. Although they admitted that they were not the being that had brought him and everyone else to the island, it offered to help everyone else by exchanging items for stories. Everyone was given a freebie by being able to tell a story from their own world (normally the Storyteller only accepted stories from life on the island) and the Batter opted to tell the story of how he met the Puppeteer and the Judge. He sucked at it, life went on.
The Batter's first month in LifeAftr was capped off with a meeting with Chara from Undertale. Due to their first conversation going horribly, horribly wrong (with player permission TDM threads were able to become game canon), Chara saw fit to give the Batter a warning: it wouldn't be so easy to purify this world without risk of dying horribly. The Batter, being the Batter, said his death was inconsequential but kept the child's words in mind.
Nothing much happened the next month besides learning about flowers and Not Quite Getting It, but October started off with a bang and the intro log became known as the "Fuck Monkeys Log". A large tribe of monkeys, having been run across by a group looking around, were none to happy with their island being invaded by a bunch of people and decided the best course of action was to kidnap a bunch of them - the Batter included - and eat them. Finding himself suspended in a cage over boiling water along with Komaeda from Danganronpa 2, the Batter managed to escape due to a combination of good/bad luck and someone from another cage having been shooting spells to cool down the water below. Soon after the Batter joined everyone else in Monkey Genocide and fought alongside Frisk and Chara and everyone came out on top.
October also herald the month that the Batter suffered his first death on the island. The compound that the monkeys had been living in had a strange door and thinking it'd be a good idea to explore, the Storyteller tossed everyone down there (although they thankfully left the door open). It was a pretty cave but it also contained parasitic crystals and Quartzalcoatl, both of which would spread a pretty nasty infection if they managed to touch you. Unfortunately the Batter was hit by this and began to suffer some nasty body horror in the form of crystals growing out of his body. Edward from FMA and Chara stumbled across him and although Ed protested and the Batter attempted to take matters into his own hands, Chara was ultimately the one to kill the purifier by slamming their blade into his skull.
Fortunately - or unfortunately due to the Batter's mindset - death isn't permanent in LifeAftr and the Batter was revived, although his Competences were sealed and he began to suffer from extremely bad luck in combat as a penalty until it was removed. Finding himself back on the beach, the Batter had a few conversations with people and...reached the same conclusion he always had: his death was inconsequential, as he's died before in his world before permanently ending its existence and his own life. Yay for RPG machanics.
November introduced him to someone who was the polar-opposite of a purifier: Sachiko Shinozaki from Corpse Party. Although he wasn't able to tell exactly what she was from the get-go, there was something deeply unsettling about her and he couldn't let her touch him. Not to mention she saw the monstrous form of the Batter that people normally didn't. Still, he wound up taking a trip with her and a few other people and wound up running for his life when they ran across two monsters known as the Flusterclucks - Katamari meets body horror, if you will. It ended with Sachiko getting her leg amputated and the Batter having to kill her because nobody can have nice things. Fun times.
